You know a big movie is coming out if I am writing a What To Expect article. Actually, it has been over two years since I last wrote one of these but it just felt necessary considering the magnitude of the impending blockbuster epic that will be Avengers: Endgame. We are approximately a month away from its release and I am already on pins and needles. So here is what you can expect before you go to see Endgame!
Runtime & Box Office Predictions
First of all, this movie is absolutely going to be considered an all-time epic when it comes to film. By epic, I am referring to movie magnitude similar to that of Braveheart (1995), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009). Outside of the fact that these are all iconic films, they all have something else in coming. They all have a runtime of 3+ hours. Avengers: Endgame is said to have a runtime of 182 min and I don’t think that is any coincidence. I believe Kevin Feige wanted to let the runtime make a statement about the type of iconic film that this is going to be, and the box office results are going to reflect that. The latter two epic movies that I mentioned earlier also happen to be the top two highest grossing films of all-time….at least for now. I expect Avengers: Endgame to gross somewhere between $2.2 and $2.4 billion worldwide, taking over the number 2 spot from Titanic.
The Russo brothers have made it clear that the tone of Endgame is going to be different than any MCU movie so far. By that, I am assuming that they are talking about the dark and heavy feeling that we are going to experience with this film. It is going to be an emotional roller coaster similar to how I described my experience with A Star is Born. This time, however, we have 21 prequels that surely have the audience emotionally invested in a different way than we have likely experienced before. I also believe that the Russo brothers are pulling the wool over our eyes with the trailers they have released. Let face it, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest superhero movie event of all-time. Do you really think that Kevin Feige would risk spoiling absolutely any facet of the movie with things released in the trailers? I have heard from multiple sources that a lot of the footage in the trailers won’t even be included in the movie. Where does that leave us? Let’s just expect to be surprised.
Characters & Plot Predictions
Just like it was for the original Avengers, Endgame is going to be focused primarily around the original group led by Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. They will also receive help from War Machine, Rocket, Captain Marvel, Okeye (Black Panther), Nebula, Wong (Doctor Strange), Valkyrie, and of course Ant-Man. I saved Ant-Man for last because it is likely he will be one of the most important characters of the whole group. He somehow finds his way out of the Quantum Realm that he is left in after the post-credit scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp. He shows up at the front door of the Avenger’s compound in the first Endgame trailer. The way I see it, there are two possible scenarios for this occurring. The most likely is found his way out of the Quantum Realm through a time vortex (mentioned in Ant-man and the Wasp) and has some key information about how to possibly go back into the time vortex and reverse time to before the snap. The other scenario could be that the surveillance video that they are watching in the trailer (see below) is from a long time ago, before the events of Captain American: Civil War. Ant-Man has somehow sent himself back in time through the time vortex and he doesn’t know where in time he is. Cap knows that something is messed up with the footage because the video took place before he had ever encountered Scott Lang, yet Scott mentions that they met “a few years ago”. This theory is much more of a stretch than the first one.
In terms of final predictions, I think most of the dead characters will be back. However, I think Loki (and to the same extent Heimdall, RIP) will likely stay dead this time . It seems like he has cheated death a few too many times and it is his time to go. Also, it seems like Tom Hiddleston is already moving on to new projects. However, I saw a theory on Super Carlin Brothers of how Loki is definitely still alive and will play a big role in Endgame. Check that video out HERE! Seriously though, these guys make some great content on Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc. Check them out.
Chris Evans has made it clear this is his last movie as Captain America. So how will he exit the franchise? I am pretty confident he will be the one making the big sacrifice at the end to save the life of none other than his rival, Tony Stark. It just makes the most sense. Cap has the least to lose and it is implied that Pepper is pregnant. I highly doubt we will have an ending so depressing that it leaves Pepper to raise a child on her own. So with the heroic sacrifice of Steve Rodgers, Stark will be able to live and disappear from the MCU to raise a child with Pepper. None of this I know for sure, but what I do know is that we should be ready to expect the unexpected. The Russo Brothers have made it abundantly clear that Endgame will have more plot twists and turns than any other MCU, Infinity War included. So I can make predictions all day long but in the end, they could easily go in an entirely different direction.
Last but not least…expect to be blown away. This is debatably the biggest movie event of this decade (The Force Awakens?). I do not expect this to be anything less than spectacular.
