Keanu is the first full length movie starring Keegan-Micheal Key and Jordan Peele. It is also the first we have heard from them since the end of their TV sketch comedy show, Key & Peele, on Comedy Central.
Keanu is the story about a boring dude Rell (Peele) and his cousin Clarence (Key) pretending to be infamous gang members in order to steal back their cat, Keanu, from notorious gang leader Cheddar (Method Man) and the Blips. When their cover is blown and the situation gets dire, Rell and Clarence have to act fast to save Keanu and also not die in the process.
I have decided I am going to excuse all the unrealistic parts of the movie because it is a comedy and I’m sure they did most of it on purpose to be funny (whether it was or not). That being said, I still had a few problems with the movie. The main problem I had with it was how much unnecessary nudity there was. Being that Key and Peele are in it, I expect that a large portion of the audience will be teenagers and knowing that, I thought that there was an inappropriate number of topless women in plain view throughout the course of the movie. It got to the point where it just seemed unnecessary to me and definitely took away from the movie a little bit.
Other than that, most of the problems with the movie were just little things that you see in every R-rated comedy. A few plot holes and other things that usually go along with the sloppy screenwriting of today’s slapstick comedies. These are the reasons why you rarely see comedies dominating the box office or getting super high reviews.
This movie will make you laugh, I guarantee it. I found myself laughing unusually hard on a variety of different occasions. The comedy bits were corny and witty, the characters were well thought out for the most part. The plot was pretty thin but honestly, it was about what I expected it would be if not slightly better. Of course, Key and Peele were hilarious and their acting was great but I was also impressed with the acting from the supporting cast. I loved how Key and Peele made references to characters from their popular TV show, and that kitten might have been the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, and I’m a dog person!
In short, this film is what it claims to be, a silly comedy that will make you laugh. If you are going expecting to receive any feelings other than laughter, you are going to the wrong movie. I enjoyed myself for the most part but I would not suggest it to anyone from the younger audiences.
